Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Hallo Freak222, ich bin kein Experte für die Lizenzen hier (die findest Du in der "Village pump"), aber nach meinem Verständnis ist das nicht möglich, weil es der Logik der freien Lizenz widersprechen würde: Du gibst das Bild beim Upload ja für jedwede Bearbeitung frei, das lässt sich nicht ausschließen und damit ist jedem auch ein veränderter Re-Upload erlaubt. Wenn die Veränderung aus Deiner Sicht eine Verschlechterung bedeutet, kannst Du das Bild aber auf die Ursprungsversion zurücksetzen. Diese "Revert"-Möglichkeit ist allerdings nicht dadurch begründet, dass Du der Fotograf bist, sondern steht jedem zu - der Fotograf muss den Revert also wie jeder andere inhaltlich begründen können. Mit der hier verwendeten Lizenz geht es Bildern also genauso wie Texten in der normalen Wikipedia: Der Text oder das Bild "gehört" einem nicht mehr und unterliegt der Veränderbarkeit durch die Gemeinschaft. Auf Basis des deutschen Urheberrechts wäre das alles anders, aber das stammt in seinen Grundzügen ja auch aus dem 18. Jahrhundert... :-) --Rudolph Buch (talk) 16:44, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

Category:People of Bavaria

Hallo Jmabel, you are right: They were born in Zirndorf, Bavaria, and therefore they are still in Category:Zirndorf (there is no Category:People of Zirndorf yet). But I could see no relation to Bavaria as a whole, like having had state-wide business activities or such. In my understanding, Category:People of Bavaria should mainly work as a top-category for the finer division of People-categories into districts and cities, listing individuals only if they cannot be reasonably associated with one or several of these subdivisions of Bavaria. But, as always: I might be wrong and welcome to be corrected... --Rudolph Buch (talk) 14:24, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

That seems odd to me. Normally, we keep categories like that on images until we might develop a more specific category, since once it is removed the information is very likely to be completely lost/forgotten: contributors can't really be expected to keep track of information that used to be on a photo or category. I personally have about 30,000 uploads here, and while I can keep track of changes to them, I can't really keep track of what used to be there. Perhaps we should bring this question (more the general issue than the particular category) to the Village pump if we disagree, because the general issue is not a small one. - Jmabel ! talk 16:34, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

It may depend on whether you perceive these categories rather as a topic of its own or rather as a large sorting box for items awaiting further sorting in smaller boxes. The "large box"-approach has the disadvantage that it tends to become uninvitingly large (like the 1300+ pictures in Category:People of Germany). But loosing information is a no-go, I can see that. What about the combination to sort them into the next-lower geographical region (there would be four of them in Bavaria) and nontheless keep the city-information? This might lead to some recategorisation as the people-of-tree grows its roots down the districts and counties, but it seems like the safest way.

Concerning Category:Schwabacher Brothers, my mistake was to ignore Category:People of Landkreis Fürth which already existed as one of the few county-categories (Zirndorf is the county seat). There has been a bit of chaos in the Franconian categories as Category:People from Franconia existed besides Category:People of Franconia and it was only fixed yesterday.

And of course I appreciate further discussion and advice of how to categorise people, especially concerning geography and profession and the combination of the two: The rules given on the help-pages are not very specific (or they are and I didn´t understand them). --Rudolph Buch (talk) 17:39, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Definitely if it's getting very large, it's good to split it. Of course, at some point, you are just stuck with something being big (e.g. further breakdowns of Category:People from Manhattan only really work for people strongly associated with a neighborhood. You probably have a lot better idea than I do what best to do to break Bavaria down to smaller components for classification. In this case, Category:People of Landkreis Fürth seems a good choice. - Jmabel ! talk 06:45, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

Luftbilder aus Bayernatlas

Hallo Rudolph,

ich habe gerade gesehen, dass du im Laufe der Zeit einige Luftbilder aus dem Bayernatlas hochgeladen hast. Als Quelle ist dieser auch angegeben. Dort steht, dass nur die Bilder mit 2m Auflösung frei zur Verfügung stehen. Ich habe allerdings das Gefühl, dass deine Aufnahmen deutlich besser aufgelöst sind. Ich glaube wenn man zu weit reinzoomt, dann zeigt der Viewer eine deutlich höher aufgelöste Version der Photos und legt erst nach kurzer Zeit die 2m-aufgelösten drüber. Wenn man Aufnahmen von großen Objekten macht (ganze Städte, Flughafen o.ä.) sollte das kein Problem sein, aber deine Bilder von der Hawk-Stellung Giggenhausen oder das von Gut Erching, haben mit Sicherheit mehr als 2m Auflösung. In wie weit da möglicherweise Ärger droht kann ich nicht abschätzen, aber zumindest wenn du neue Bilder machst würde ich sicherstellen, dass das richtige Bild schon geladen ist. -- Vuxi (talk) 11:48, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

Hm, interessantes Thema: Ich ging davon aus, dass die Luftbilder im Bayernatlas dem CC-BY-SA-Datenbestand entsprechen und habe die meisten Bilder von dort gezogen, weil das mit dem WMS-Server ungleich komplizierter ist (ich habe leider überhaupt keine Vorstellung, wie eine 2m-Auflösung aussehen sollte). Ich schicke einfach mal ein Mail an das Amt und frage, ob sie ein Problem mit den Bildern sehen. Jedenfalls vielen Dank für den Hinweis, --Rudolph Buch (talk) 16:49, 29 September 2013 (UTC)

Graves in Munich

Was hast du gegen die Kategorie Graves in Munich? Wurde das irgendwo diskutiert? Gruß --Rufus46 (talk) 20:49, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

Gar nichts - aber nicht alle Bilder waren einem Friedhof zugeordnet und umgekehrt gibt es in den Friedhofskategorien viele Gräberbilder, die noch nicht unter "Graves" lagen. Ich dachte mir also, ich sortiere erstmal alles in die Friedhöfe um und gehe dann deren Kategorien systematisch durch, um sämtliche Gräber zu erwischen und in die Graves-Kategorie zu kopieren. Wird also wieder befüllt und ist dann hoffentlich vollständig.

Aber wenn wir schon darüber reden: Findest Du "Graves in Munich" besser als flache Kategorie (ohne weitere Unterteilung) oder soll ich für jeden Friedhof eine "Graves in Friedhof X" anlegen, die dann sowohl unter dem jeweiligen Friedhof wie auch unter der "Graves in Munich"-Kategorie hängt? Letzteres trennt beim einzelnen Friedhof die Bauwerke besser von den individuellen Gräbern ab, zerstört aber den visuellen Überblick in der Graves-Kategorie. Gegen Ordnung schaffen, habe ich ganz und gar nichts (war nur nicht zu erkennen), mach also ruhig weiter.

Ich wäre sehr dafür, unter jeder Friedhofskategorie, eine Kategorie Graves in ... anzulegen, also als Unterkategorie von Friedhof XY und Graves in Munich. Deinen Vorschlag unterstütze ich also voll. In den Friedhöfen, in denen es nur 1 - 2 Fotos von Gräbern gibt, kann man ja erst mal darauf verzichten (und ordnet sie nur unter Graves in Munich ein); aber wie du willst. British Library "Mechanical Curator" collection index

Thank you for your fantastic work on the Germany section of this index -- really great, I can't thank you enough.

In answer to the question you posted at COM:VP,

Is it necessary to keep the entries in the geographical index in the numerical order so that books with a lower number stay further up even within the country-specific subchapter?

Answer: No, absolutely not. What I've tended to do, given large chapters, is to try to break them down further; in particular, by pulling out sub-regions wherever I can, or works all related to the same place.

I then tend to organise titles into something like the following sequence:

(i) General/topographical/pictorially-focussed works (ii) Historically focussed works (iii) Works with other particular focuses -- eg perhaps geology, or transport; grouping together works with a similar focus

before getting into (iv) Works with a more specifically local focus.

& I tend to order works with a similar focus by date of publication, rather than number of images, because I think this probably is going to be more useful for people using the index.

Some of the regions on the UK page that have a bit more content -- eg London / East England / South-East -- should show this structure.

Hi Jheald, like you, I was away for a few days so I´m answering a bit late, too: Thanks for your reply (and there´s no need to thank me as I wouldn´t do it if it wasn´t fun). Following your lead I´ll break down Germany into some further sub-sections after the first half is done. But I´d appreciate if I could refrain from sorting by publication date as this increases the "dumb work" (i.e. the part that isn´t fun) a lot without having much obvious use for the following upload of the images. Hallo,

ich freue mich immer sehr über Deine Bilder von Personen, für die sonst kaum freies Bildmaterial vorhanden ist und helfe gerne bei der Kategorisierung :-) Aber zum Thema:

Eigenschaften, die sich nicht nur auf das einzelne Bild beziehen, sondern auf die ganze Person, werden in der übergeordneten Personenkategorie kategorisiert: Category:Christian Zahn ist bereits in Category:Members of the SPD einsortiert, deshalb kann die Parteimitgliedschaft bei den Einzelbildern entfallen. Bei den Geburtsjahren ist es genauso - dagegen sind Kategorien wie Category:People with bow ties stets auf das einzelne Bild bezogen, das bleibt dann natürlich und wird nicht in die Personenkategorie übernommen.

Eine Anleitung mit allen Einordnungskriterien kenne ich leider nicht - hier auf Commons ist alle deutlich weniger definiert (bzw. chaotischer) als in der DE-Wikipedia. Grundsätzlich gilt, dass jede Person, die einen eigenen Wikipedia-Artikel hat und zu der wenigstens ein einziges Bild vorliegt, auch eine Personenkategorie erhalten sollte. Mein eigenes Vorgehen (aber keine Regel) ist dann, Politiker zumindest nach den wichtigsten Kategorien zu kategorisieren:

1. Politisches Amt aus der Oberkategorie Category:Politicians of Germany by political office
2. Parlamentsmitgliedschaft(en) aus der Oberkategorie Category:Members of parliaments of Germany
   1. Wenn weder ein politisches Amt noch ein Abgeordnetenmandat noch eine Parteimitgliedschaft vorhanden war, statt 1 und 2 die Category:Activists from Germany
   2. Wenn die Person nicht nur als Politiker bekannt wurde, eine der Berufe-Kategorien aus Category:People of Germany by occupation
   3. Wenn ein besonderer Wirkungsbezug zu einer Stadt oder einem Bundesland vorhanden ist, der nicht bereits durch 1 oder 2 ausgedrückt wird, eine Regionalkategorie aus Category:People of Germany by city bzw. Category:Politicians of Germany by state (Abgeordnete eines Landesparlaments sind dem Land bereits dadurch zugeordnet - sie bekommen keine zusätzliche Politicians-by-state-Kategorie)
3. Parteizugehörigkeit(en) aus Category:Politicians of Germany by party
4. Geburtsjahr-Kategorie (z. B. Category:1900 births)
5. Todesjahr-Kategorie (z. B. Category:1900 deaths)
6. Wartungskategorie Category:People by name, die alle individuellen Personenkategorien kennzeichnet

Man könnte natürlich noch viel mehr machen (Orden, Mitgliedschaften, Geschlecht), aber das überlasse ich den Kollegen, die sich in den jeweiligen Bereichen auskennen. --Rudolph Buch (talk) 14:01, 3 July 2014 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 startet in Kürze

Hallo Rudolph Buch,

in Kürze ist es wieder soweit. Der nun schon traditionelle Fotowettbewerb Wiki Loves Monuments wird im September zum vierten Mal stattfinden. In ähnlicher Form hatte unlängst der Wettbewerb "Wiki Loves Earth" eine erfolgreiche Premiere. Zu allen bisherigen vier Wettbewerben haben seit 2011 gut 3000 unterschiedliche Teilnehmer (User) ihren Beitrag geleistet. Du warst dabei, und bist auch herzlich eingeladen, am bevorstehenden WLM-Wettbewerb wieder dabei zu sein.

Allein in Deutschland wurden in den letzten drei Jahren im Rahmen von WLM rund 100.000 Fotos zu den insgesamt ca. 850.000 Kulturdenkmalen bundesweit hochgeladen. Jährlich haben sich mehrere Hundert Wiki-Fotographen daran beteiligt. Auch im kommenden Denkmalmonat wird dies gewiss wieder der Fall sein. Der Tag des offenen Denkmals am 14. September bietet bundesweit vielfältige Möglichkeiten, Denkmale nicht nur von außen, sondern auch von innen zu fotografieren. Denkmallisten sind dabei ein wichtiger Orientierungspunkt und zugleich auch Ziel der Einbindung der Fotos. Auch in diesem Jahr sind wieder neue Denkmallisten hinzugekommen, die hilfreich bei der Planung von individuellen oder Gruppen-Fototouren sind und auf eine Bebilderung warten, wie z.B. zu Görlitz oder Zittau. Unter den Landeshauptstädten fehlt nur noch Stuttgart. Aber auch hier ist Licht in Sicht.

In der Mitte Deutschlands hat die Denkmallandschaft der thüringischen Landeshauptstadt Erfurt nun das Licht der Wikipedia-Welt entdeckt. Mehr als 50 Tabellen enthalten 3.700 Denkmale. Allein die wunderschön restaurierte Altstadt umfasst 1.800 Denkmale. Eine von WMDE geförderte WLM-Fototour nach Erfurt am Wochenende vom 29. – 31. August lädt herzlich ein, diese einzigartige Kulturlandschaft zu dokumentieren. Mehr Informationen findest Du auf der Projektseite.

Aber ich finde es schade dass das Bild kaum 5 Jahre in der WP verbleiben durfte — ich betrachte den mit dieser naheliegenden Verbindung aufgezeigten Hinweis auf diese Duplizität und Iteration staatlicher Massnahmen als gewichtigen educational value; ein IMHO nicht völlig unerhebliches Argument gegen die Löschung.

Hallo, das ist tatsächlich Zufall und hat mit dem Jahrestag nichts zu tun - ich räume gelegentlich in der Region München und damit auch Category:Dachau concentration camp auf und versuche dann, die Vielzahl der gleichartigen Bilder dort sinnvoll in Unterkategorien zu gruppieren: Da entstanden dann zum Beispiel Category:Dachau international memorial oder Category:Dachau concentration camp main gate. Und letztgenannte Kategorie hat mich zu Category:Arbeit macht frei und zu Deiner Fotomontage geführt. Ich bewerte sie auch gar nicht inhaltlich - aber sie hat eben keinen dokumentarischen oder informativen Charakter und ist somit nicht für Commons geeignet. --Rudolph Buch (talk) 09:23, 28 January 2015 (UTC)

Hallo zurück, Du hast sie nicht eliminiert, sondern nur die Kategorisierung gelöscht: Die Kategorie existierte deshalb weiterhin, wurde aber auf einer Wartungsseite für fehlende Kategorisierung gelistet. Der Commonscat-Link auf DE-Wikipedia bestand außerdem ebenfalls noch. Wenn Du eine Kategorie komplett gelöscht haben willst, musst Du sie wie in COM:CFD oder COM:SPEEDY beschrieben markieren (wobei SPEEDY immer das Problem aufwirft, dass Wikilinks plötzlich ins Leere führen, wenn die globale Verlinkung nicht überprüft wird - das ist im Zweifel schädlicher, als eine leere Kategorie zu akzeptieren). Greetings, I responded to the discussion you started at the Village pump but I wanted to drop a note here. I want to clarify I am not emptying the Men category, I am just refining the cat of the by name categories to the by name subcategory, which falls under the Men category. You are also correct there are a lot more and the category is grossly underpopulated. That is true of a lot of categories though not just that one IMO. I won't make any more updates for a while and do some other tasks so that can play out though. As I stated in the discussion at the Village pump I agree some discussion is needed about that category schema anyway regardless of what I am doing because I think there is a lot of room for improvement there. Also, as for edits, if the numbers scare you I was an extremely high output editor on ENWP and did between 10, 000 and 30, 000 edits a month for a couple years straight. So I can knock out the numbers pretty quickly although I would probably need to get a flood flag if I do more than a 100 or so a day. I look forward to hear what everyone thinks about this. Marine photos

These two images have absolutely nothing to do with Thornville. I encountered them when looking for photos of the village (en:Thornville, Ohio is unillustrated), and their presence in the category wasted my time because they were patently inappropriate as contents. Think of the reuser: if you're navigating categories while looking for a photo of Marines grilling hamburgers, are you going to look under the geographic categories for one Marine's hometown? Perhaps Category:People from Perry County, Ohio would be appropriate, but not the village category, because they're most definitely not located there. Nyttend (talk) 12:25, 30 May 2015 (UTC)

ich hatte die Einordnung ausgeblendet, um die Kategorie auf Eis zu legen.

Die Dateien, für die ich sie eingerichtet hatte, musste ich zurücknehmen. Veröffentlichung unter PD-OLD wird vom Staatsarchiv nur für Werke akzeptiert, die schon einmal veröffentlicht worden sind, z.B. historische Druckerzeugnisse. Zur Online-Stellung bisher unveröffentlichter Archivalien ist die Diskussion unter den Archivaren im Fluss. Da will Bremen bundesweite Vereinbarungen abwarten und nicht durch Alleingänge gefährden. Eine Abschrift hochladen hätte ich übrigens gedurft – aber hundert Seiten frühbarocke Kurrentschrift zu transkribieren, ist kein wirkliches Vergnügen :)--Ulamm (talk) 07:06, 4 June 2015 (UTC)

Hallo, das Problem ist nur, dass Kategorien nicht dadurch "auf Eis liegen", dass ihre Kategorisierung ausgeblendet wird: Sie tauchen dann in einer Wartungsliste als unkategorisiert auf, außerdem könnten sie von anderen Nutzern weiterhin zur Kategorisierung von Dateien verwendet werden. Also bitte entweder einfach kategorisiert lassen und auf baldige Uploads hoffen oder einen Schnelllöschantrag stellen (also zum Beispiel {{speedy|Category is empty and not needed at this time, will be recreated when files are available}} auf die Seite schreiben). What exactly do you want to discuss? I notice that I placed an underscore between the two words. I would not normally do that and I don't understand why there is not a space there but I certainly think it should be corrected. If you want to delete this category, what would you replace it with as prison wardens and governors are a needed category in my opinion. Hi Mike, this has already been resolved: I had doubts that there was a clear distinction between Prison wardens and Prison guards. But I was told that this are actually two different functions, so I withdrew my discussion request and just interlinked the two categories. Im Mittelpunkt steht bekanntlich das Fotografieren von Kulturdenkmalen. Du hast an einem der letzten Fotowettbewerbe teilgenommen und wir freuen uns auf weitere Bildbeiträge von Dir.

Viele interessante Motive, nicht nur Burgen und Schlösser, sondern auch Fachwerkhäuser, Brücken und Brunnen, technische und Industriedenkmale und vieles mehr gibt es noch zu fotografieren, damit sie in der Wikipedia dokumentiert werden können. Nützliche Tipps findest du auf unserer WLM-Projektseite. Du kannst gerne individuell Fototouren durchführen oder aber Dich auch Gruppentouren anschließen. Besonders freuen wir uns auf Fotos, die Lücken in den Denkmallisten der Wikipedia ausfüllen.

The Ribat related names category in its last version contained more than 35 lines explaining its contents. please check the last version before its deletion. I hoped Yan would be keen to discuss the category but he deleted it rapidly without discussing or commenting on my modification of the categroy. Hallo, du hast das Bild 16JUN2005 Munich 089.jpg der Kategorie Dachau concentration camp entrance building zugeordnet, also dem Jourhaus. Wir sind uns sicherlich einig, dass das Jourhaus auf dem Bild nicht abgebildet ist, aber nach dem Aufnahmewinkel kann das Bild auch nicht aus dem Jourhaus aufgenommen sein. Ich habe meine Vermutung zum Kamerastandort (etwa 40 m südöstlich vom Jourhaus) eingetragen und die Kategorie auf die Oberkategorie zurückgesetzt. Nach den Grundsätzen, die auf deiner Benutzerseite stehen (und die mir ganz gut gefallen), bist du sicherlich einverstanden.
